Atmosphere Interview Re-Release and Episode 53 Now Available

Early in my career at KTUH I had the opportunity to interview my favorite hip-hop artist, Slug from Atmosphere live on air.  The interview was scheduled to last 5 minutes but went on for over 15 minutes . . . because Slug is so damn cool!  We touched on everything from poke and musubi to Donald Trump, inspirations, and how he got the nickname Slug.  Listen to the interview here.

Just another totally normal AWESOME weekend

Episode #52 of House Connection on KTUH FM Honolulu may have been the best set out of all 4 of my gigs this past weekend.  See the playlist, listen, or grab a free download at the bottom of this post.  Friday started out with a funky, disco house set on House Connection featuring samples from Us3 - Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia), Grandmaster Flash - The Message, and Donna Summer - Hot stuff, and more.  After the show I jumped down to Bale Manoa Gardens for a nice little tech/world house set at Manoa Deep House Takeover opening for Jimmy from Soulgasm, George OH, and Patti Kane.  As soon as it got dark I headed over to Siam Paradise on Dillingham Blvd.  The restaurant has a killer sound and light system that the north shore boys from Dirty Feet Crew took full advantage of with their new monthly south shore party series.  It didn't hurt that it just happened to be 420.  I wish I had got more footage or a recording.  The energy was epic.

Saturday, a plan for a small house party morphed into an 80's themed party at a great warehouse location on the north shore.  I couldn't have asked for a better weekend.  And it's almost Friday again.  Time to wash, rinse, and repeat!

Triple Trouble Friday 420

DJ gigs always abound on holiday weekends.  And the highest of all holidays is no different!  I've got more events lined up this weekend than joints in a Cheech and Chong movie.  Huge Mahalo to DJ Snagglepuss and DJ Ai Kane for holding down the studio on House Connection last week while I was off island.  I'll be back this week for a special 420 set.  Tune in at KTUH.org , 90.1 FM Honolulu, or 91.1 FM Haleiwa from 12pm to 3pm (HST).  Then I'm heading downstairs to Bale Monoa Gardens for a quick deep groovin' house set with all-stars like Patti Kane, MF Coon, DJ Jimmy, and DJ George Oh.  (check the flyer below)

I'm winding up the night at the Dirty Feet Crew CLUB 420 party!  It's at an all new location, Siam Paradise, at 1336 Dillingham Blvd.  VIP smoking section, killer sound system, new club lights.  Headliners Chance King and Connor Jensen throwing down with DJ $kinny and Francisco Peterson opening it up.  I'll be sandwiched in between from 11pm-12pm dropping an epic 420 bass house set sprinkled with all your favorite smoking songs from Snoop, Cypress Hill, Musical Youth, and more.  Drink specials 9pm-2am.  Admission is $15 at the door with FREE entry for anyone wearing DFC apparel.

For episode #50 I am super stoked to bring in creator of The Purple Room, and KTUH's own, Sam Champagne dropping by as guest DJ.  Sam has been killin' it on live events lately, holding it down at north shore's new hotspot The Elephant Shack, as well as Manoa Gardens' Wednesday Green Drinks, and a recent events with Detroit's own DJ Assault.   And when he's not creating his own events for Purple Room, he is busy as a DJ at Asylum or as Host of his Monday morning show on KTUH, The Recovery from 6am-9am.  Sam Champagne has a versatility to his style that suits his eclectic music library perfectly.  Downbeat, world, and tech can seamlessly collide with bassy, groovin' house music in a matter of minutes.  If you haven't heard The Recovery yet, it is a must listen!  The music is perfect for those Monday mornings and his guest DJs bring variety, skill, and energy that I personally guarantee will make Mondays considerably more bearable!

Episode #49 featured my rendition of the "History of House Music."  The exploration started with the break loops, drum machine, and soulful indie disco cuts that were the signature of Frankie Knuckles.  We heard the Belleville Three and a few of their influences like Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder.  Acid House, New York's Club Kids scene, French House, and the trans-Atlantic exchange of house music culture round out the history section as the show moves into the commercialization of electronic music and discusses the intertwined nature of electronic and hip-hop music and culture.  Listen to the episode via stream or download HERE. DJ $kinny Guest Set Now Available & Radiothon Preview

Special Radiothon Episode #49 "History of House Music" will feature an abbreviated history of house music.  From Chicago, to Detroit, New York, London, and Berlin, we'll track the genesis of house music, including the outgrowth of genres like techno, trance, EDM, and more.  In the four-plus decades since Frankie Knuckles presented his signature sound, looping funk and soul instrumental break sections and matching the beat to a drum machine, at Chicago's The Warehouse, house music has evolved, adapted, and in some cases appropriated, for better or for worse.  The journey will venture through Detroit's Belleville Three, New York's Club Kids, Frankie Bones and the P.L.U.R. movement, the rise of Berlin's simultaneous independent scene, rave culture, festivals, adoption into mainstream and pop music, commercialization of dance music, House and hip-hop re-converge, and of course, in the spirit of House Connection, sampling.  Tune in to KTUH 90.1 FM Honolulu, 91.1 FM Haleiwa, the RadioFX app, or at https://ktuh.org on Friday March 23 from 12pm-3pm (HST).

For Episode 48, one of Hawai‘i's fastest rising electronic music DJs is stopping by KTUH's Mānoa studio to drop a special hour-long sneak preview set in advance of his next couple performances.  DJ $kinny has been putting in work over the last couple years to really develop his unique sound and style.  His mix back in May 2017 really put the whole island on notice after his first run of big shows.  Now, leading up to his next two big shows, his following has grown and Hawai‘i knows to expect a banging performance, with heavy bass, killer drops, and daring transitions. 

This Saturday, March 17th, DJ $kinny is taking the stage with fellow House Connection guest Chance King, KTUH's Host of the Friday Dub Crawl, Sejika, and a special unnamed headliner at NEON JUNGLE at THE UNDERGROUND.  The underground is located at 1146 Fort Street Mall, near the corner of Bethel and Pauahi streets, only 2 blocks from the St. Patrick's Day block party.  Stop by and check out some of Hawai‘i's finest DJs . . . and don't forget that neon green!

It's not all about the bass!  Sometimes pairing a driving bass beat with a smooth piano melody, grooving sax, or the jazz flute can totally change the feel of a four-on-the-floor beat.  Episode 46 features jazz house, French house, a little Chicago house, and plenty of samples ranging from Dave Brubeck and NIna Simone to Dalton&Dubari and The Style Council. 

Hour three features Joey G on the decks dropping some funky soulful house music.  His style is influenced by the first and second waves of Chicago house music and his experiences sneaking into clubs as a teenager.  I've always loved his fearless transitions, old-skool tracks, and amped up tempo.  Check out his set below, available for stream or download.

Sex Jams Preview and Episode 43 Now Available

Every year February 8th-14th is Sex Jams Weeks at KTUH FM Honolulu where DJs play their funkiest, filthiest, racy, risque, and downright naughty tracks in what some have described as "an homage to getting down with the get down" and "the moment that put the freak in frequency!"

House Connection welcomes as guest host the least under-sexed, most over-qualified lover of house music in the islands into the studio to celebrate the undeniable sexiness of house music - DJ Mickey Weems a.k.a. 3AM Booty Call.

An entire show dedicated to deep house beats, both vocal and instrumental, sets the stage for a next-level performance by Gabstop.

Gabstop to make guest DJ appearance on House Connection

Episode #42 of House Connection is set to be a memorable one as special guest Gabstop drops by KTUH's Mānoa studio to do some damage on the wheels of steel.  Last time he appeared on the show he dropped a next-level Cinco De Mayo set just in time to release some steam before final exams.

With roots reaching back to California's Moon Tribe movement and diverse projects like "Rock the Stashbox: A Hip-Hop Movement" Gabstop holds it down on all levels of Hawaii's DJ scene.  His distinctive blend of mixing and turntablism combined with what is perhaps the island's most diverse use of genres takes listeners on a true sonic adventure.  Whether its tech, trance, bass, hip-hop, reggae, cumbria, or salsa, you can count on two things:  His transitions are gonna be rock solid and you never know what to expect next!

House Connection, Episode 41 mixes Tropical, World, and Spoken Word inspired House Music

Episode 41 of House Connection on KTUH 90.1 FM Honolulu fuses dance music with sounds from India, Syria, Japan, Spain, Greece, Nigeria, and more in an exploration of Tropical, World, and Spoken Word samples in house music.  Fela Kuti (Nigeria), Sergio Mendes (Brazil), Hraach (Armenia), Malcom X, Charlie Chaplin, and many more are sampled and discussed with minimal interruptions as DJ Mike Curtis throws down a classic grab bag set culminating with 10 tracks that were sampled in the dance music tracks for the set.  DJ Mike Curtis even drops in a signature remix at about the 1:55:00 mark with IndySoul - Heaven Can Wait (DJ Mike Curtis We Are Not Enemies Remix).

House Connection, Episode 40 feat. guest DJ /Producer Chance King

Episode 40 of House Connection on KTUH 90.1 FM Honolulu starts off with a nod to the history of Chicago House with classic songs from the second wave of Chicago House like Richard 'Humpty' Visson's "Alright" and Ray Krebbs' "Rocket."  As the tempo rises the mix switches to world beat focused Deep House before a special 2-hour mix by Hawaii DJ/Producer Chance King debuting his first worldwide release, "Don't Stop."  Throwing down 10 of his own tracks, a collaboration, and a bootleg remix of some of the filthiest combinations of tech and bass, Chance King demonstrates his creativity, polish, and hard work as he puts his stamp on every bit of this impromptu performance.
